National StrategyKey objective: To increase the numbers into treatment by 100% by 2008
Key target: To increase participation in treatment programmesThe national strategy is led by the National Treatment Agency. The NTA was established in 2001. It has three main aims:
More treatment
Faster access to treatment
Better quality treatment
To enable the achievement of these aims the NTA:
Increased the financial allocation to Drug Action Teams
Championed the introduction of pooled treatment budgets
Set targets for Drug Action Teams
Approves Drug Action Team plans
Monitors Drug Action Team plans through quarterley reviews.
Provides information on best practice.
Regional StrategyThere is no regional strategy, however the NTA has employed a regional commissioner to investigate opportunities to develop tier 4 services in the south west. Local StrategyKey objective: The key objective is to increase the capacity of the local treatment system.
The Drug and Alcohol Action Team met the Local Delivery Plan (LDP) target for 2005/06 and increased numbers in treatment by just over 10% to 1250.
- Develop and pilot shared care schemes across the county
- Ensure waiting times are reduced and meet national targets
- Implement Models of Care
- Reduce drug related deaths
